Restless legs syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. The sensation involves moving the legs compulsively to relieve an uncomfortable tingling feeling in the legs. These symptoms are very bothersome, but they do not cause any harm.
Restless legs syndrome symptoms (restless legs)
The symptoms mainly appear in the afternoon and at night, such as tingling, prickling, or an unpleasant sensation in the lower legs. Additionally, there is an uncontrollable restlessness in the legs: one "has" to move to get rid of the unpleasant sensation.
"Going to bed peacefully is difficult, and during sleep, the legs sometimes make spasmodic movements."
As a consequence, sleep quality is often affected; during the day, the person feels tired or drowsy.
The symptoms are usually more intense just before falling asleep.
Restless legs can also bother you if you sit for a long time. For example, on the bus, in the cinema, or on the plane.
Causes of restless legs
The cause of restless legs is not clear. However, it seems that older people suffer from it more frequently and that it occurs more in women than in men. The condition can have several causes:
- pregnancy
- medication (some antidepressants or psychotropic drugs)
- poor kidney function
- Symptoms may worsen due to:
- smoke
- alcohol
- café
- overweight
- little exercise
Therefore, it should be taken in moderation, it is also advised to exercise more, but not intensely at night.
Treatment of restless legs
In general, drug treatment is not recommended. This is because it does not help much and has quite a few side effects. However, if the symptoms are really severe, the possibility of treatment may be considered. Dopamine agonists (such as ropinirole or pramipexole) can sometimes help, but keep in mind that only 1 in 5 people will see their symptoms reduced.
These drugs have many side effects, especially at the beginning, such as nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. With prolonged use, restless legs may worsen: symptoms spread to other parts of the body, start earlier during the day, or become more severe.
The alternative: Hemp patches
Cannabinoids are an endogenous substance produced by the body in small amounts. The human body has a very elaborate endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cannabinoids activate cannabinoid receptors (CB receptors) in the body. Meanwhile, there is increasing scientific evidence that cannabinoids are a very effective drug for various applications.
"In particular, the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of cannabinoids are fundamental. Additionally: Hemp patches are 100% natural, non-addictive, and have no side effects."
Anecdotal evidence
Through the sales of our hemp patches to our customers, they told us that since they started using the patches, their restless legs had significantly decreased! Of course, it doesn't work for everyone, but for many people, the hemp patches work very well.
